Here are some updates to the positions posted for AFSCME Local 1724 nominations:

City budget process::

We are nearing the end of the process for the Employees in Transition (EIT). Sixteen (16) AFSCME positions were eliminated as part of the City's ongoing budget reductions. Most of the employees affected had choices available that allowed them to move into identified vacant positions and a couple opted to accept the severance package as part of the layoff language and retire early. A few opted to exercise their bumping rights and we are working through the bumping process right now. We are hopeful that we may complete this process without anyone losing their job in the process. The members impacted due to the bumping process are meeting this week to review options.

The Library chose to address the budget reductions by reducing the hours of all of the Library Assistant 2 positions which resulted in an hour loss equivalent to one day a week or approximately a 20% reduction. It is likely that because of announced retirements and the layoff of the six (6) probationary employees that the Library can restore all of the hours reduced to those impacted as required in the contract. We have not heard that the Library intends to restore those hours but we will keep members informed of the progress as new information becomes available.

NEXT MEETING: Nominations and election for vacant position of Correspondence Officer. This position will be filled until the next election cycle in September 2011.
